HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting

Course Description

Do you work in the child care industry or are you a parent/grandparent/friend who cares for children at home? Would ou know what to do in an emergency situation?

First aid skills is an asset no person should be without. While it is a legal requirement to have first aid trained staff on site at most workplaces it is also a valuable skill to have at home and with your family.

This course provides practical training for workers within an education and care setting to respond to first aid emergencies in line with legal and workplace requirements, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

It teaches how to identify illness or injury, access emergency services, safely provide first aid treatment using action plans, equipment and resources, for CPR, defibrillation, administering an autoinjector for anaphylaxis, administering asthma medication, immobilisation for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, for bleeding and shock and other conditions.

You will learn basic anatomy, physiology and the differences between adults, children and infants relating to CPR, managing an infant or child with an acute illness, or who requires an immediate ambulance response and conveying incident details to parents, caregivers and emergency services.

The course covers completing incident documentation and debriefing for improvement of response, recognising psychological impacts, talking with children about their emotions and seeking help as required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does my workplace need to provide for onsite CPR Training?

I supply the manikins and all training equipment required for the class.

All I need from your workplace is enough chairs for each of the participants and an open area to train in.

Is there a minimum number of participants required for a group booking?

I require a minimum of 6 participant to run an onsite workplace group training session

Is there a maximum number of participants allowed in a group booking?

I can train a maximum of 20 participants at a time.  If maximum amount of participants are being trained I require enough room for manikins to be placed on the ground and an extenstion of 30 minutes will be added to the training session to allow for adequate practice and assessment time and ensure your team receives quality training.

If there is insufficent space at your venue then back to back express classes are always a great alternative to ensure the best training for your staff.

What if some of my staff only need CPR but the rest need their full first aid certificate?

That is no problem at all and it is very common. For groups like this I recommend starting the CPR only and First Aid group at the same time.

I start the class completing the CPR component of the training and assessment. When this is complete those that just needed CPR are free to leave and either head home or return to work and those that need the full first aid carry on with the rest of their course with me.

Does the First Aid Certificate include CPR?

Yes that is correct. With successful completion of the First Aid course you will receive Nationally Recognised Certificates for

  • HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting
  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
  • HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
  • HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Can I still get a certificate if I cannot perform CPR on the floor?

To qualify for a Nationally Recognised Certificate for HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, it is a requirement participants are able to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin on the floor.

While reasonable adjustment can be made like extra time or a chair for assistance the CPR assessment on an adult manikin must be completed on the floor and to Australian Resuscitation Standards to qualify for a certificate.

If you have back or knee problems that prevent you from kneeling please contact your supervisor or myself prior to training as you may only be able to recieve a certificate of attendance.

What if I just want training for myself?

That’s great! I look forward to seeing you in one of my public classes!

I run CPR and standard First Aid classes open to the public every Friday at Waterman Eastland at Eastland Shopping Center in Ringwood.

Bookings can be made via the booking calendar above.

Do I need to renew my CPR certificate to keep my first aid certificate valid?

In short the answer is yes.

According to the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) it is reccommended that you renew your CPR training annually and your first aid training every 3 years to keep your skills and knowledge up to date.
